I admit it: I hate snow. So for the past ten years, I've hiked the lowlands where it's warm when it was snowy outside. This year I decided to do a hike to a place that's going to have snow on the ground, and looking at my footwear -- hiking sandals and sneakers for hot temperatures and some mid-height boots for cooler temperatures -- it was pretty clear none of it was going to work. The boots were too low and would get snow down them (ick!) and become soaked, the sneakers were clearly out, and I tried a couple of schemes to use the hiking sandals such as wearing dive booties to keep my feet warm, but in the end had to conclude that it was time: I needed a real winter boot, one that was high enough to keep snow out and waterproof enough to handle slush without soaking through. So I tried on pretty much every winter boot that local stores had, and really wasn't happy with any of them. For the price, they should have stood up and danced for me. None of them did -- they were too tight, too loose, not durable, too stiff, had seams in places where it was clear they would leak in any water deeper than half an inch, or otherwise were nowhere near worth the lofty prices being charged for many of them. So I took a chance and ordered this boot from Amazon. I figured that with Amazon's free return offer, if they didn't fit or had clear issues like some of the other boots, I would simply return them for a refund.Well, they came in today, a day after I ordered them (Amazon Prime). People recommend going up a size, and I'm happy I took their advice -- I went up a size and the boots are just slightly too loose for me. Thick wool socks take care of that. The general fit is quite good, at least for my feet. The build quality is as good as most of the expensive boots that I looked at, and the design is "good enough". They're reasonably light-weight, though with this much rubber and leather you're not going to get hiking sneaker sub-10-ounce weights (duh). Like others, I fault the closure system for the uppers, which makes it difficult to properly tighten / loosen the boot. Still, for the price, I'll put up with a slight bit of inconvenience, and ding the boot only one star for that. It's still too early to know anything about durability. But looking at the general design and build quality, I see no reason why it wouldn't last as long as other winter boots of this type. If I learn more about the boot in my upcoming hiking trip under winter conditions, I'll edit this review and let you know. But looking at what I have on my feet right now as I clump around the house in my new boots and snow pants (they still fit after ten years, yay!), I have to say that this seems to be an incredible bargain -- decent quality boots for a great price.Update: Back from my trip. Combined with the thickest mountaineering boot socks that I could find (REI brand) these boots kept my feet warm and dry even when splashing through a shallow stream, and *NO BLISTERS* despite the fact they'd only been worn once before the trip. First boot I've ever worn that didn't need to be broken in to be comfortable. They're like giant tall moccasins on your feet! The soles aren't stiff enough for mountaineering crampons, but (shrug). That's the price you pay for a nice flexible comfortable boot. Only downside I found: The brown dye from the boot *does* run when it gets wet. My brown socks now have some browner patches on them. So I'm leaving it at 4 stars despite the fact that these boots work quite well for my uses.I have been using these boots in the Boston blizzards and cold this winter. There is no insole in these boots, just the 200g Thinsulate liner and the rubber sole as one reviewer mentioned. The cold will transfer through the rubber sole to the liner and the bottom of your foot if you stand out on the snow or ice for long periods. I took the advice of one reviewer and cut out a heavy felt footbed out of some carpet pad that I had. Wow! what a difference in the warmth of these boots. Now the cold does not transfer to the bottom of my feet. As for the fit. They were a little snug on the sides in the front of your foot at first but after walking a few minutes, the liner wears in and the fit is good. If you have extra wide feet, then a size up may be needed. Overall, these boots are great and driving a car with them on is not a problem. They keep my feet dry and are not too bulky. I would give them five stars if they included a heavily insulated footbed from the start.Preparing for another Michigan winter, I dug out the pair of Nationplus boots I bought from Amazon a year ago and wore all last winter. It looks like they're in need of replacement, so I'm back for another pair. The rubber is split in two places on one boot, allowing water and slush to get in, the liners are pretty raggedy and full of holes, and the treads are worn down enough to reduce traction. The leather is still in good shape, as are the eyelets and laces. Why am I buying the same boots even though the first pair failed after one winter? Well, usually I wear out two pairs of boots per winter, sometimes three. By my standards, these boots lasted a long time! They fit well, keep my feet warm and dry, and if they do get damp the liners can be pulled out to dry. The liners aren't thick enough to make the boots overly bulky. I've had boots with thicker liners, and found them too big and bulky for everyday use.I scoop snow, which involves lots of walking back and forth from the area I'm clearing to the area where I dump the snow, and I also walk my dog every single day. I think it's all the walking on hard roads and bare pavement that really destroys boots. They'd last a lot longer only walking in snow.Great pair of boots for 60 bucks. Hoping the new pair lasts another full winter!I just received my new Kamik Mens Waterproof boots in the mail a couple days ago and I could not be happier. I am the furthest thing from a boot connoisseur as I usually have not owned a pair of snow boots (although in MI, I should have always owned a pair!) I ordered these because I just purchased my first house this year (2012) and we just had our first big snowfall a few days ago and I needed something to wear while shoveling. Luckily Amazon Prime saved the day (again) and I was able to get my boots in time to shovel for the next snowfall and thats when I fell in love with these things. They are soooo warm and comfortable. I even wore them outside a few times without socks on just to test how effective the boot actually was and I can say that it was remarkable....my feet didnt get cold whatsoever. I highly recommend these boots. A quick list of the pros:PROS1: extremely comfortable2: true to size3: when tied loosely, easy to slip on and off without struggle4: very warm5: they seem to be very durableCONS:Honestly, none that I can tell.had these for 6months but only really wore them in the last 3 months. they were a bit uncomfortable as the soles are very thin but after putting some insoles in they were not quite as bad. unfortunatly the soles started leaking a week ago and when it rains my feet are soaking. very disappointing as the boots were not cheap.
